About

Drakonheim is a fantasy world created by Lordimass. It is a Dystopian Steampunk High Fantasy based around the country of Drakonheim, an authoritarian state running on a feudal system. The world is defined by its strict racial hierarchy, which places Dragonkin at the top of the pile as the de-facto rulers of the state.

The role of a Creator plays a critical role in this world, being the only people who are able to control technology to create mechanisms and automatons, the lowest sentient creature on the racial hierarchy.

Citizens of Drakonheim are largely unaware of the system that they live under due to a lack of education and funding. This leads to people forming groups and majoritively staying within their own towns or villages, only knowing what they're told by their parents. This also means that most do not have the ability to read, making libraries incredibly rare across the nation, those that do exist are usually shut down by the authorities to prevent the spread of knowledge. The only known "proper" library exists within the dragon skull of Ossisan, the capital of Drakonheim.

Etymology

The name of the country originates stems from 'Drakon' and 'Heim', meaning "Home of the Dragons". This ancient name stems from the country's history with dragons and their genetic cousins, the Dragonkin. This has led to the name being used both externally as well as internally based on the importance of these drakonic inhabitants.

History

Before the current ruling system the region consisted of many independent ruling bodies in each town. In this time the area was in almost total anarchy, with the one agreement being to stand strong against the strong rule of terror that the dragons held over them, although this information is not known publicly in the modern day so as to prevent seeding ideas of revolution. This control of information became a trend after The Unification, a key historical event which marks the change over of power from the dragons to the Dragonkin, as well as the merging of the towns and villages into the one great nation of Drakonheim. This merging also formed the regions of Ironheart, Morgen, Vesper, and Shadowfel. These were created to distribute the governance, and are the first major part in the pyramid system of governance the state would later come to rule under.

Following The Unification and the establishment of the northern border with Hothis, a hard border wall (The Drakon-Hothis) was built to secure the territory and prevent anybody from leaving or entering the country without express permission. This was the beginning of a long history of disputes and wars with Hothis due to the poor relations established from the very beginning of the country's existence. The creation of this wall was one of the leading causes for the development of Creators and the focus on research into steam-powered technology. This is because it was very difficult to build such a strong wall without the knowledge of how to build it fast and strong, so some members of the newly formed Drakonic Royal Family were assigned to create machines and methods to build these defences.

After the completion of The Drakon-Hothis research efforts were continued in an effort to prevent the loss of these skills in the Dragonkin, this led to a joint effort to design a device to manipulate the land to their will by harnessing the power of the stone beneath their feet. This device, the Fugarius Clockwork, was a gargantuan machine with several drill cores heading deep into the earth, requiring the power of a dragon to turn the central pillar. This was an issue for the Creators because they knew that all but one of the dragons had been driven away. This final dragon, the namesake of the region of Vesper was known to live in a deep cave in the side of Vesper Volcanic. It was for this that the Automaton were developed by the Creators, for they could withstand the heat of the lava within the cave, and more importantly, Vesper's fire. This allowed the Creators to capture the dragon, bringing it back to the Fugarius Clockwork. The machine was used to create spiralling mountain ranges in a spectacle which formed huge clouds of lingering dust across the nation (nicknamed The Storm), earning the north and south branches of the spiralled mountains the name 'Procellas', literally meaning 'Storm'.

Humans and Dragonkin alike were able to survive the storm through humanoid intuition, covering their faces with rags to allow them to continue to breath, but due to the huge lung capacity of the dragon, Vesper died in The Storm. Her skull was later used to house the Ossisan Palace, a huge structure which overlooks the city of Ossisan. The branches of The Procellas granted a great advantage to the defence of Ossisan, causing the town to rapidly grow into a city following its involvement with The Clockwork, becoming the capital city of Drakonheim.
